The Australian and New Zealand dollars struggled to make any headway on Friday as weak Asian bourses and disappointing US data sapped appetite for commodity currencies, putting them on track to end the week broadly lower. The Aussie was stuck at $1.0339, having earlier dipped to a low of $1.0309, a fair distance from this week's high of $1.0418. Traders cited bids just ahead of $1.0300 and stops near $1.0295. A break below would target $1.0226, April's low.
The local currency is down 0.4 percent this week but still up 1 percent for the year. The New Zealand dollar marked time at $0.8133, from a peak of $0.8254 this week, on track to post its largest weekly loss this year with a 1.2 percent decline.
