Taiwan stocks ended up 0.23 on Thursday, as gains in defensive plays such as transportation and cement amid global risk aversion outweighed losses in heavyweights HTC Corp and Hon Hai. TSMC climbed 0.47 percent. It said it will raise capital spending this year to more than last year's $7.3 billion, another record high for the company. The main TAIEX share index rose 17.69 points to trade at 7,622.69 points, after opening flat.
Transport shares rose 1.19 percent and cement 1.19 percent. Banking shares were also among the biggest gainers, up 0.77 percent. Electronics shares lost 0.13 percent, with HTC down 3.75 percent and Hon Hai down 2.31 percent. The Taiwan dollar was up by T$0.046 to trade at T$29.500. Foreign investors were net sellers on Wednesday, bringing their total selling to T$41.53 billion this month.
