The United States Central Intelligence Agency wants to intensify the use of combat drones in Yemen, according to a report Thursday in The Washington Post. CIA director David Petraeus is seeking permission to hit targets in Yemen even if the agency cannot determine in advance the identities of those who might be killed.
If the spy agency's request is granted, strikes could be launched against targets simply exhibiting a pattern of suspicious behaviour. These types of drone strikes, called "signature strikes" by the CIA, are already in use in Pakistan. The CIA has presented its Yemen proposal to the National Security Council. A decision has not been reached.
