The provincial health ministry has been providing budget to devolved hospitals for past several months, besides coping with measures, including hikes in doctors, paramedical staff and nurses' salaries and stipends, Sindh's Health Minister Dr Saghir Ahmed said on Thursday. He was addressing as the chief guest at the inaugural session of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre's (JPMC) 49th Annual Medical Symposium.
The five-day symposium is titled 'Every Life Counts'. Dr Saghir Ahmed said the JPMC, the country's biggest hospital, had been devolved to the province after the 18th Amendment, adding that the hospital administration should now heed provincial government's directives for reforms in the health sector.
Later, he told reporters that there was no issue of paramedical staff's strike in any hospital, adding that the government was trying to tackle various issues. Commenting on the issue of the autopsy report of Jeay Sindh Quami Mahaz (JSQM) chief Bashir Qureshi, he said that it would be presented in a few days, adding that the post-mortem committee comprised 15 senior professors and doctors.
Honorary chief guest Professor Abdul Rab urged young doctors to focus on research work. JPMC's Executive Director Professor Tasneem Ahsan said the hospital was facing some problems since it had been devolved to the province, adding that efforts were being made with the co-operation of the provincial government to bring improve the hospital. She hoped that the provincial government would provide funds to the hospital as soon as possible.
Chairperson of the Symposium's Organising Committee Professor Jamal Ara, Secretary Symposium Azhar Choudhary, NICVD's Executive Director Professor Khan Shah Zaman, Director NICH Professor Jamal Raza, In-charge of JPMC's Radiology Department Professor Tariq Mahmood, Professor Liaquat Ali, Professor Sattar Hashim and Professor Tariq Rafi also spoke on the occasion.
