Nawaz for holding talks with India

Published Updated

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif said on Thursday that Pakistan should take initiative for holding talks with India for the resolution of Siachen issue.
"Negotiations between India and Pakistan on Siachen issue is in the interest of two countries and time would come when India would be ready for holding meaningful talks on Siachen issue," he said while talking to reporters on Thursday after having a meeting with former PML-Q senator Tariq Azeem who formally announced to join the PML-N, reposing full confidence in the leadership of Nawaz Sharif.
PML-N President claimed that Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani had also endorsed his point of view on Siachen issue. It may be noted that General Ashfaq Kayani on Wednesday called for talks to end confrontation, saying Siachin should be demilitarised, being a difficult front for both the countries.
Indian Minister of State for Defence MM Pallam Raju on Thursday also welcomed Kayani's call for Siachen's demilitarisation. PML-N President Nawaz Sharif asked Pakistan and India to immediately start negotiations to resolve the Siachen issue and pull their troops out of the region.
Nawaz was the first leader of any political party who visited Gilgit-Baltistan on Tuesday after the avalanche incident. PML-N President reiterated, if the two sides managed to resolve the issue they would save a lot of money now being spent on troops and use it for development and welfare of people.
Nawaz also condemned target killings in Karachi, Quetta and Gilgit Baltistan and asked Prime Minister Gilani to visit the effected areas and also get implemented decisions of the Supreme Court by taking action against miscreants. He held some political elements and those sitting in government responsible for creating law and order situation in Sindh. He said, apart from government, law-enforcing agencies were not fulfilling their obligation to maintain law and order.
Former senator Tariq Azeem announcing to join the PML-N said that he was thankful to Sharif for inviting him to join PML-N. Azeem also hit out at the government saying that Nawaz Sharif was the only one who had visited Siachen after the tragedy, while the others had to follow him. Tariq Azeem also asked Sharif to visit Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan to help resolve issues there. Moreover, addressing a gathering at Imambargah Nechari in Quetta via telephone, Nawaz said that provincial and federal governments had failed to properly address the Balochistan issue.
