Pakistan's population is rapidly becoming a victim of food insecurity, damaging society and reducing productivity, the Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) said on Wednesday. Criticising the decision-makers, it said that they were ignoring this critical issue.
PEW's president Dr Murtaza Mughal said that food insecurity was also forcing millions of children to drop out of schools, swarming the already overcrowded child labour market on parents' insistence whose focus remained survival in the face of spiralling inflation.
He said that although the situation was disturbing across the country, but the incidence of malnourishment in urban centres was as high as 37 percent. Terming dwindling incomes a great threat, Mughal said that poverty was forcing a lot of people to forego proper calorie intakes. He said that misplaced policy of exporting food "to please a few" had also contributed to increasing food insecurity.
