President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday said the democratic government attached highest priority to the development of Fata as a part of counter insurgency strategy because poverty pushed the youth into the trap of terrorists. The President was talking to a delegation of Parliamentarians from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), which called on him here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on Wednesday.
The delegation included MNAs Hameedullah Jan Afridi, Malik Bilal Rehman, Muhammad Kamran Khan, Zafar Baig Bhittani and Senator Hilal-Ur-Rehman. Spokesperson to the President Senator Farhatullah Babar was also present during the meeting. Spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the delegation congratulated the President on his visit to India for Ziarat and his meeting with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on way to Ajmer Sharif and termed it as a good omen for peace in the region. The delegation of Fata Parliamentarians apprised the President of issues relating to the leadership of their parliamentary group in the Senate and National Assembly.
The Spokesperson said that matters relating to law and order situation and developmental projects in Fata, progress in the implementation of Fata reforms and progress on implementation of various initiatives under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) in tribal belt were discussed the meeting.
The President reiterated the commitment of party as well as the government for exploring all avenues aimed at the socio-economic development of the people of Fata and bringing them into the mainstream of national life as tribal people were the worst sufferers of the war against militancy and terrorism.
