Learning for development: India outstrips Pakistan in quality education: HEC chief

Pakistan is far behind in quality education than India, where the ratio of higher education is 18 per cent while in Pakistan it is just 7.8 per cent, chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) told an audience of a seminar on Monday.
Addressing a seminar on 'How HR can effectively move to Business Partner Role', organised by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), he said that the HEC had launched several programmes, including ranking of universities, ranking programmes, establishing quality assurance programmes and uniform curriculum to produce value-added graduates. According to him, socio-economic development through higher education was the commission's mission.
President SHRM and Chairman of the National Committee on HR standards Zahid Ali Mubarik said that Pakistan has been granted membership to the committee that includes members from the US, UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, the Netherlands, Portugal, Finland and Malaysia. The National committee on HR standards was formed by the Directorate-General of Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority, in collaboration with the SHRM Forum Pakistan to review standards being developed by ISO and give its input from the country's economic interests' point of view, he added.
Zahid said that SHRM was the world's largest organisation devoted to human resource management, representing over 250,000 members in more than 140 countries. Enumerating the SHRM Forum Pakistan's, Zahid said that it had achieved in making Pakistan a member of the global ISO committee of 13 countries responsible for making HR standards, convening of the National Committee on HR Standards and its notification by the government of Pakistan, physical launching of global HR certifications (SPHR, PHR, HRMP, HRBP) in Pakistan. He said that it had also launched a pilot research on HR metrics in collaboration with the FAST National University.
