HelpAge International Pakistan, in collaboration with World Health Organisation (WHO), on Friday organised a national seminar on ageing and health with the theme 'Age Demands Action on Health', which was attended by representatives of national institutions, provincial health departments, international donor agencies, national and international NGOs and academia.
WHO selects a special topic and theme for the day every year and this year's topic is Ageing and Health with the theme: "Good health adds life to years". For the first time in 60 years, WHO is going to put global ageing first on World Health Day in the face of monumental demographic shift, with projected older people population exceeding the children under 5, by mid of this century.
The speakers highlighted the challenge in terms of social protection in general and health protection in particular, because of ageing world. While the participants shared their recommendations on the need to formulate policies on ageing especially when it comes to the health of the older people by introducing legal binding instruments that can help secure rights to healthy life for older people.
Acting Country Director HelpAge International Pakistan, Syed Moeez-ud-Din said: "There should be no age limit on good health. We believe older people everywhere should also be facilitated in accessing appropriate healthcare like other age groups. It is discrimination, not age that limits the health and participation of older people. Societies who take care of older populations will be better prepared to cope with the changing world. Good health throughout life is a very wise investment for the future."-PR
