At least eight people including three Pakistan People's Party (PPP) workers were killed in violent incidents in different parts of the city here on Friday, police and rescue sources said. Police said that four PPP activists were targeted by unidentified assailants near Urdu Chowk in Orangi Town in the limits of Mominabad Police Station.
Police said they victims were sitting at a shop when unidentified persons riding bikes came there and opened indiscriminate fire on them and fled. They were rushed to hospital, but three of them succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital. The deceased were identified as Farhan alias Guddo, 30, Nafees Siddiqui, 45, and Umar Hayat, 55, while the injured as Rana Gulzar, 35. Gulzar is stated to be in critical condition.
Police said that soon after the incident they cordoned off the area and started search to arrest the attackers. Following the killings, shops and markets were closed in the area. The post-mortem of Farhan was carried out at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) while Umar Hayat and Nafees Siddiqui at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH). All the three victims were active workers of PPP, said Latif Mughal, Information Secretary PPP Karachi Division.
He said that Guddo was former General Secretary of PPP Orangi Town while Rana Gulzar was Information Secretary of PPP Orangi Town. He said that the killings appeared to be targeted. Meanwhile, a worker of People's Student Federation (PSF) was shot dead by unknown armed men in Scout Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal area in Mobina Town police precincts.
Police said the deceased, Saeed Hussain Masood, 29, son of Aziz Khan was fatally injured after five to six armed men attacked on him. He was rushed to nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Then the body was moved to JPMC for medico-legal formalities. Police registered a case, 172/2012, under section 320 of Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of Muhammad Hussain, the brother of the deceased against unidentified persons. In another incident, a prayer leader of a local mosque was killed near 4-K Chowrangi in the remits of Surjani Town police station.
The deceased was identified as Muhammad Naeem Sheikh, 50, s/o Shahabuddin resident of North Karachi. His body was shifted to ASH for medico-legal formalities. The body of an elderly woman, who was strangulated to death, was found from her home in Khamosh Colony in the limits of Gulbahar police station. The deceased, Bacha, 80, wife of Ali was found dead at her home. Police said the woman was killed over personal enmity by her relatives.
The body was shifted to ASH for medico-legal formalities In another incident, a man was killed in Godhra Muslim Society, New Karachi in the limits of New Karachi Industrial Area Police Station. The deceased was identified as Abdullah, 50, son of Mohammad. The body was shifted to JPMC. Meanwhile, three people were injured in firing incident in Soldier Bazar area. The injured were rushed to CHK, where they were identified as Sarwar, 36, Khan Bahadur, 38 and Gulzar, 40. Later Sarwar succumed to his injuries during treatment.
