The Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) has dropped its recommendations in relation to foreign intelligence agencies and the use of Pakistani airbases by foreign troops, it is learnt. According to sources, as many as three recommendations relating to new terms of engagement of Pakistan with the US have been dropped.
The decision to this effect was taken at a PCNS meeting held under its Chairman Senator Mian Raza Rabbani at Parliament House on Friday after an adjournment of joint-sitting of Parliament. The opposition has already expressed its serious concern over the draft of recommendations presented in the joint session of the parliament. The joint session was summoned on March 20, 2012 to pass recommendations. For this purpose, the government is engaged in talks with the opposition.
The sources said the meeting also discussed whether the reopening of the Nato supply route should be linked to an end to drone strikes by the US. They said that the committee also agreed that Nato supply route would not be allowed to transport lethal weapons. The PCNS will meet again on April 4 to finalise recommendations.
The meeting was attended by opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Muneer Khan Orakzai, Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Speaker National Assembly, Dr Fehmida Mirza, Ishaq Dar, Mushahid Hussain Syed, Haider Abbas Rizvi, Afrasayab Khattak, Kalsoom Parveen, Muzaffar Hussain Shah, Ministers Hina Rabbani Khar, Rehman Malik and Syed Khurshid Shah, and Pakistan's ambassador to the US Sherry Rehman.
