The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday arrested Pakistan Railways General Manager Saeed Akhtar, for his alleged involvement in embezzlement of Rs 600 million. The Railways GM was summoned to NAB office in Islamabad from where he was arrested and then shifted to Lahore for further investigation, an official said. Akhtar was given a one-year extension as GM Railways (Operation) by Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani earlier this month.
The NAB''s special cell, headed by Director General Colonel Shahzad Bhatti (Retd), had also established some facts against Federal Minister for Railways Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, the official said adding that due to political pressure arrest warrants could not be issued against other officials involved in corruption. The cell is investigating various cases against the Railways high-ups, who are allegedly involved in corruption cases involving an amount of Rs 4 billion.
