In order to make environmental institutions administratively and judicially efficient and effective in Pakistan, a two-day 'South Asia Conference on Environmental Justice' would commence from Saturday (today). Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry will deliver a special address in the inaugural session of the conference in Bhurban, Muree.
The conference is a joint initiative of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Asian Development Bank and International Union of Conservation of Nature (ICUN) for better enforcement of environmental laws under ADB strategy 2020. Additional Registrar, Supreme Court, Sajid Mehmood Qazi, on Friday said that local and international advocates, judges of Superior judiciary and trial courts would participate in the four sessions of the conference.
During four sessions of the conference for better understanding and enforcement of environmental laws five major issues would be discussed including identification of major environmental issues in the SAARC region, environmental policies and laws and their adequacy, environmental adjudication, the structure and practices and awareness, education and capacity building for environmental laws, he added. He maintained that approximately 150 participants are expected to attend the Conference and selection of the participants would be made under the guidance of the Committee for Enhancing Environmental Justice.
Qazi further said that major groups, participating in the conference included the Chief Justice from SAARC countries, Superior and district judiciary of Pakistan, global and regional experts in environmental law and justice, advocates including advocate generals, officers of environmental administration bodies, environment experts, selected NGOs, academia and media.
The Additional Registrar asserted that practical recommendations of the Conference would be formulated on issues in administrating environmental justice which would be considered by the Judicial Policy making Body and other concerned forums for further implementation.
