Removal of solid wastes from tannery zone: PTA seeks Governor Sindh's direction for KMC

Chairman, Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), Khurshid Ahmed, has urged Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan to direct the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) to lift and dispose of the solid wastes from tannery zone. In a communication, he urged the government to come forward to save the export industry and facilitate it by removing such hurdles in its smooth working so that it flourishes and realizes its full potential and plays its true, effective role in development of national economy.
He criticised the concerned departments for their continued failure to extend essential services to the biggest national cluster of export-oriented leather and leather made-up industries located in Sector 7/A, Korangi Industrial Area (KIA), and for not providing a permanent arrangement for removal of solid wastes, which are causing pollution in Tannery Zone.
The area presents an unpleasant image of the exporting leather and leather made-up industries to the visiting foreign customers, who are now reluctant to come to Tannery Zone, he added. "It is hurting the business prospects of this Industry, which contributes palpable foreign exchange earnings to the national exchequer, pays millions of rupees to the government in form of taxes and various levies, besides being a source of livelihood for a large number of families," Khursheed added.
