Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declined to accept the request of three provinces, Sindh, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan to extend the time for display of preliminary electoral rolls following Supreme Court dismissal of the commission's plea seeking further extension in deadline for verification of the new voters' lists.
According ECP, the apex court dismissed its application, CMA No 1116/2012 in CP No 31/2012 and declined to grant the prayer for extension in time for display of preliminary electoral rolls, the same being not relevant and maintainable. The ECP has thus decided that it cannot accede to the requests for extension of time and the application/resolutions of the Provincial Assemblies (KPK, Balochistan and Sindh) made in this regard are declined, it said.
According to the ECP sources following the requests of the three provinces, the Commission had sought to extend the deadline of March 20 for at least 10 days. The last date of verification of around 85 million new voters lists at more than 55,000 display centers has been expired on Tuesday (March 20) and according to ECP sources the process will now continue in its district offices instead of display centers.
The sources said that the process like transfers of voters' constituencies would continue till announcement of the schedule for general elections. About the final electoral rolls, an official of ECP said that now the data will be collected from across the country from more than 55,000 display centers and the final lists will be published by the end of May, this year.
