The Chairman, Press Council of Pakistan, Raja M. Shafqat Khan Abbasi has hailed the decision of the Indian government and authorities for the release of an old academician S M Khalil Chishty, enabling him to spend his remaining last days of life with his family, friends and relatives. He said that the release of the veteran scientist is a good gesture on the part of Indian government which granted clemency to Dr Chishty. It will pave the way for further improving the relations between the two neighbourly countries.
Abbasi had earlier written a letter dated February 17, 2012 to the Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, drawing his attention toward the mercy petition which was pending before the Governor of Rajasthan. Abbasi personally appealed the Indian Prime Minister to intervene in the matter sympathetically and facilitate the early release of Dr Chishty, enabling the old educationist, to return to his motherland. "The release of Dr Chishty would certainly not only send a positive message across the border but also to the international community," he observed.
"It is also a step forward in bringing the people of the two countries closer to each other as well as promoting peace and harmony between the people of two great nations," the Chairman added. Abbasi thanked the human rights activists, NGOs and civil society who raised their voices for the early release of Dr Chishty.-PR
