The government on Friday agreed to the opposition's call to conduct an operation in Karachi with a view to deweaponising the financial and industrial capital of the country. The last sitting of the current session of the National Assembly that began one hour late was marred by a strong protest by Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) over the recent wave of incidents of extortion in Karachi.
It compelled the House to adjourn proceedings without taking up any formal agenda item except questions for the day. Speaking on a point of order amid a noisy protest, Mehtab Abbasi of PML-N underlined the need for conducting a big operation in Karachi to deweaponise the city. Pakistan People's Party (PPP) senior Minister and Chief Whip Syed Khurshid Shah supported the call of opposition and stated that the government was ready to prepare a roadmap if the MQM also agreed to the proposal. Mehtab Abbasi said that lawlessness in Karachi was not a new phenomenon, as the city had been hostage to extortion, kidnapping for ransom and target killings for several decades.
Sheikh Roheel Asghar said that there were three major stakeholders in the province and all of them were also coalition partners in the province as well as in the Centre. It was, however, strange that one of the coalition partners was protesting against the incidents of extortion.
