Karachi Customs Agents Association (KCAA) on Saturday announced that it will stop all clearance activities and observe strike at Air Freight Unit (AFU) from Monday. Faisal Mushtaq, general secretary KCAA in a telephonic conversation with Business Recorder, stated that after having two meetings headed by additional collector AFU Hasan Sardar with Gerry Danette, Shaheen Airport Services and Royal Airport Services, the custom agents are now forced to close their work at AFU from March 12, 2012.
He said these custodians were given eight days by the authority to work out a rational time regarding number of free days. Instead of working out scheme, they refused to attend the meeting called by additional collector. Customs service provider have been given no option but to close their work as a matter of fact two days free time is not enough and it was reduced from five days to two days when 24x7 was started and after discontinuing the 24x7 it should be brought to the original five free days.
He said even if the flight lands at 11.59pm that day is included and than only one day is left in respect of free time. He urged FPCCI and KCCI to take serious notice as in the absence of any regulatory authority in relation to custodians at AFU and shipping companies, these sectors are not only causing problems for service providers but creating adverse impact on the cost of doing business.
