Pakistan Agri Forum's Chairman Muhammad Ibrahim Mughal has alleged that agricultural growth of Punjab had come down to 1.73 percent per annum from 5.3 percent per annum some four years back. Speaking at a seminar arranged by his organisation here on Saturday, Mughal claimed that reasons behind decline in agricultural growth were failure policies and faulty planning of the provincial government during the last four years.
He specifically criticised the performance of Agricultural Marketing, Punjab Agricultural Research Board (PARB), star farm and kitchen gardening schemes. Mughal said the bureaucracy attached with agriculture in the province had sold many dreams to the Punjab Chief Minister about promotion of agriculture but practically achieved no success.
Mughal and other speakers including Chaudhry Ilyas, Mian Fazal and Chaudhry Zaheer also criticised the performance of sitting provincial secretary agriculture and said during his tenure as Secretary Irrigation he failed to ensure provision of water at tail of even any one canal. He said similarly his four years tenure in agriculture had pushed the agricultural sector 20 years back instead of marching forward. However, the speakers welcomed the new Secretary Agriculture and hoped that they would take some concrete steps to bring agriculture out of crisis and play a role for betterment.
