The preparations for Christmas in the twin cities are gaining momentum by the Christian community to celebrate their most important religious festival. The areas where Christians live in large number and Churches are being decorated with lights, colourful posters and traditional Christmas Tree.
About the preparations, the officials of Ministry of National Harmony said the festivals of minorities are celebrated officially by the government throughout the year to follow the true ethical values and in this regard, the upcoming festival of Christmas will also be celebrated at higher level. Christian employees working in the government departments will also enjoy optional holiday of December 26 that was recently approved for Christian community for celebrating Christmas. Christmas is celebrated on the day Jesus Christ was born.
This year too, it will be marked with lights, songs, colour and a festive mood. Girls and boys studying in various educational institutions run by the churches are rehearsing for tableau and carols to add charm to the Christmas functions. All young and old are visiting Sunday bazaars and markets of twin cities to shop for themselves and their loved ones. Youth is interested in buying Christmas cards and gifts to show their love. Many can be seen composing songs to be sung at functions in connection with the Christmas. The main ritual of the Christmas celebration is decoration of Christmas Tree to welcome the arrival of Santa Claus also known as Father Christmas. The tree is usually decked with different ornaments including baubles, small bells painted gold or silver, stars of different shapes and sizes, pine cones, apples, candies, tinsel and balloons made from glass, metal, wood and ceramic. An angel and star is often placed at the top of the tree representing the host of angels.
Christmas Day is celebrated as a major festival and public holiday in countries around the world, including many whose population is mostly non-Christian.
