Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) was declared the largest corporate giver by total volume of donations for 2010 at the Corporate Philanthropy Awards hosted by Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy in Karachi on December 15. The company bagged the award for the seventh consecutive year in the same category. Governor, State Bank of Pakistan Yaseen Anwar presented the award to MD and CEO PPL Asim Murtaza Khan.
The event was attended by leading businessmen, representatives of multinational companies, government and civil society representatives, donors and media. Anwar, speaking at the event, appreciated the winners for their generosity and stake in the country's development. He urged the corporate sector to further build institutional mechanisms for streamlining philanthropic contributions to address social issues on a more proactive scale.
As a responsible corporate organisation with a stake in the country's development spanning over 60 years, PPL believes in sharing the benefits of development with underprivileged communities through social asset creation. Though the company has earmarked a budget of 1.5 percent pre-tax profit for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects, actual spending touches nearly 2 percent of profit before tax. The company's CSR programme is focused on ensuring sustainability and maximising long-term impact of development initiatives through a participatory process of needs identification, consultation involving all stakeholders, including communities, followed by close monitoring and inspection to extract lessons learned and further improve implementation and delivery.-PR
