A division bench of Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday struck down detention of Afaq Ahmed, chief of Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM-H) under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).
The bench comprising Chief Justice Musheer Alam and Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh after hearing identical petitions, moved under Article 199 of the constitution of Pakistan by Amjad Shafqat, brother of Afaq Ahmed and representative of Human Rights Commission, South Asia Iqbal Kazmi, against detention of Afaq Ahmed, ordered his release, if not wanted in any other case.
Earlier, the bench had sought reasons for his detention under MPO from Sindh Home Department. The Home Department submitted some reports in support of the orders of his detention on Friday, which the court did not find as sufficient reason for the detention under MPO. The chief of MQM-H was detained on November 29 for 30 days under MPO.
