EU governments have endorsed a new agreement with the United States on the sharing of air passengers' data for flights from Europe to America. The EU said Tuesday the accord addresses European privacy concerns. It sets limits to what the data can be used for by US authorities, and contains stronger data protection guarantees, it said.
If endorsed by the European Parliament next year, the new accord will replace an agreement from 2007. That had to be renegotiated after the parliament criticised it as being too lax and allowing US authorities too much insight into the private data of EU citizens. Under the new arrangement, passengers will be able obtain access to their records to correct them, and have the right to administrative and judicial redress.
