The Supreme Court on Monday directed all the provinces to provide jobs to eunuchs so that they could lead their life in a respectable manner. A two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Justice Khilji Arif was hearing a constitutional petition under Article 184 about humiliation of eunuchs.
The court also ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to held meetings with the Social welfare Departments as well as eunuchs on divisional or district level for registering voters of eunuchs. All the chief secretaries of 4 provinces have been asked to cooperate with the Nadra for issuance of National Identity Cards (NICs) as well as handing over their property.
Expressing its annoyance over the Balochistan government for not taking steps regarding the welfare of eunuchs, the court asked the secretary Social Welfare Department that why the court should take action against him. During the hearing, applicant Dr Aslam Khakhi requested the court to direct the government for allocating quota to eunuchs. He said people had taken interest for their welfare after the court intervention.
He said three female students of Quad-e-Azam University were writing thesis on the issues of eunuchs. One eunuch, who belonged to Karachi, told the bench that she did two masters in different subjects and now doing job in the Cantonment Board for collection of taxes.
She said despite achieving the tax collection target, there was no increase in her salary. She said 16 more eunuchs were doing job in the same department on contract basis. The court directed the department concerned to examine their cases for granting them permanent status. Joint Secretary ECP, Sher Afgan said votes of 106 eunuchs had been registered and further steps were being taken to register their votes in the country.
