A blast from detonation of an improvised explosive device on University Road near Karachi University on Saturday killed a motorcyclist and injured two others in the remits of Mubina Town Police Station, police and eyewitness said.
The blast occurred near a gate of Karachi University at about 11 am. Police sources said that the motorcyclist was seriously injured in the blast and was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Two others persons were also injured who were released from hospital after necessary treatment. The deceased was identified as 47-year-old Mirza Munaf Baig, son of Abdul Qadir Baig. He was teacher by profession and was resident of Rehman Villas, University Road Mosmiat.
According to police, a powerful bomb, planted near a tree near the KU Silver Jubilee Gate exploded when a Rangers vehicle reached the spot. The Rangers vehicle was partially damaged but the driver managed to take away the vehicle.
The bomb exploded at the place which usually remains crowded especially when BA and BSc exams are being conducted in the University. Police said preliminary investigation indicated that the bomb was planted by roadside.
The blast, which was heard several kilometres away, damaged several buildings and vehicles. Security forces cordoned off the area after the blast and shops were shut down. Police said that blast seemed to be the sequence of the incident that in which Rangers personnel were killed and four more injured when their vehicle was targeted with a roadside bomb in Karachi on Friday. Inspector General (IG) of Sindh Police has sought the report. Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and Home Minister Manzoor Wasan condemned the blast and ordered an inquiry.
