Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Friday said that he would propose setting up of public call offices (PCOs) in jails to enable the prisoners to contact their family members. The Minister was talking to mediapersons after a visit to Central Prison Karachi (CPK). He said that he would move a proposal to the Prime Minister with regard to setting up five PCOs in each jail for providing access to prisoners to their families.
The calls of prisoners would be recorded and monitored, he added. Rehman Malik said that the prisoners were being provided telephone facility with monitoring at jails in different countries. He said legislation with regard to setting up PCOs in jails would also be undertaken. The Interior Minister said that he has received some reports about use of mobile phones in jails.
Rehman appreciated the authorities concerned for introducing various reforms in Sindh jails, which he said, had produced good results. He said that the salaries of jails officials in Sindh would be enhanced and these would be brought at par with the salaries of Motorway Police.
The Minister said the officials concerned had been directed for counseling of the target killers and other under custody accused to make them useful members of the society. Rehman Malik appealed to the toy manufacturing factories to stop production of toy-guns and asked the shop owners to remove such toys from their shops. Rehman said the Rangers had arrested total 58 suspects during a raid at a Rummy Club in Channesar Goth. He said the law enforcement agencies had also recovered arms including 11 pistols, five shot-guns, three 9 m.m. rifles, one air-gun and a revolver, during a surgical action in Khuda Ki Basti on Friday.
