Following the drive-by grenade attack on PPP leader Zafar Baloch, the intense wave of violence gripped Lyari late Tuesday night. Armed assailants took positions at rooftops of buildings at Bheempura, Salar Compound and other areas and started heavy firing that led to suspension of all commercial and social activities in these areas.
The residents said the activists of PPP suspected that the attackers came to these areas after conducting grenade attack on Zafar Baloch. They said that they had also heard big bangs apparently of blasts in these areas. Meanwhile, police said the gangsters from Arshad Pappu Group were suspected of the grenade attack on the PPP leader.
Heavy gunshots continued at Eagle Chowk, Art Chowk, etc, till late night. Five persons including PPP leader Zafar Baloch sustained injuries when armed riders hurled a grenade at Gul Mohammad Lane, Lyari in the jurisdiction of Kalakot police station late Tuesday night.
According to police, two armed riders threw a hand grenade near the office of defunct Peoples Amn Committee (PAC) that left five persons including Zafar Baloch injured. When contacted, DIG South Commandant Shaukat confirmed that PPP local leader Zafar Baloch was injured in the attack. Zafar also served as president PAC when it was not declared as defunct committee, they added. Police said Ghaffar Zikri Group might have been involved in the attack. The injured were taken to Lyari General Hospital for treatment.
