Punjab Agriculture Minister Ahmad Ali Aulakh has directed the provincial agriculture department to ensure availability of high quality and high yielding vegetable seeds till August 15 to make the Chief Minister Punjab's 'Kitchen Gardening' programme a great success.
He urged the department to make available 170,000 packets of high yielding quality vegetable seeds and mobilise all available resources in this regard. Aulakh was chairing a meeting of the Executive District Officer (EDOs) from Faisalabad, Lahore and Gujranwala Divisions held at the Agriculture House here on Wednesday with regard of promotion of kitchen gardening programme in the province.
The Punjab Agriculture Minister said promotion of kitchen gardening will not only make the province self-reliant in vegetable production but will also pave way for sowing of organic vegetables and their use. He said this programme is aimed at provision of fresh quality vegetables to the people living in cities. Director General Agriculture (Extension) Dr Anjum Ali while briefing the meeting said that 170,000 packets of quality vegetable seeds would be distributed through staff of the agriculture department, livestock, forests, irrigation, different universities and non-governmental organisations.
Sale of these packets will start from August 15, 2011 and a packet containing seeds of eight different vegetables having a weight of 116 grams would be sold at Rs 50 per packet. He said vegetable productions remain better during Rabi season as compared to Khareef season. The meeting was also attended by Director Agriculture (Headquarters) Waqar Ahmad, Project Director Fruits and Vegetable Asif Khan and others.
