Police, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Customs, Pemra and Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan (IPOP) have a key role in eradicating the menace of piracy to bail out the country from economic crisis, said Sajjad Ahmed Bhutta, Director General IPOP here on Friday.
Piracy is one of the major causes of economic crisis and by promulgation of effective laws and result-oriented co-ordinated efforts of enforcement agencies, the trend of unlawful import of raw material and products in Pakistan would be discouraged, Bhutta said while presiding over a meeting of Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Co-ordination Committee (IPREC).
The meeting was attended by officials of enforcement agencies including FIA, Police, Customs, Pemra, IPOP and other relevant government departments and organisations. Addressing the meeting, Sajjad Bhutta said Enforcement Co-ordination Committees initiate and monitor the enforcement and protection of intellectual property rights through designated LEAs of government and it also collect data and information to check the infringement and counterfeiting.
He asked the concerned agencies to nominate the resource persons of their respective departments so that they could be extended training facilities and technical support to improve their efficiency. Similarly, the designated officers would also be apprised with the latest advancements about IPO by associating themselves in the relevant activities.
It was stressed in the meeting that without proper implementation of relevant laws it is difficult to weed out the menace of piracy and provide a level playing field to local as well as foreign investors. The Director General IPO-Pakistan said that it is the need of the hour that concrete steps be taken to make the law enforcement mechanism foolproof keeping in view the inputs of all the stakeholders. The participants of the meeting also shared their experiences and gave suggestions to further strengthen the enforcement policy.
