Faisalabad Liver Centre will observe week for the awareness of people against Hepatitis disease, from July 26 to July 30. During this week, a camp would be set up in the liver centre from 9am to 2pm for free tests of Hepatitis-B and C. A special function will also be held on July 28 in the centre to observe World Hepatitis Day, in which Mian Muhammad Latif, Chairman, Chenab Group will be the chief guest.
Talking to the newsmen, Trustee Faisalabad Liver Foundation, Sheikh Ashfaq Ahmed said that due to unhygienic drinking water, Hepatitis is spreading in this populous city and one every four people is carrying the virus of the disease. He said that Hepatitis is a curable disease, provided it is diagnosed in time. He said that some local industrialists and philanthropists constituted the liver foundation some six years ago and constructed a liver hospital in the 'junkyard area of Civil Hospital with a cost of rupees 35 Million. Costly machines for ultrasound, endoscopy and laboratory for anti viral test were installed in the liver centre. He said that since 2006, as much as 5,082 patients have been provided anti-viral treatment and added that per patient cost for this treatment is around Rs 36,000 which was borne by the foundation. He further said that till date, over 183 million rupees have been spent on the treatment of hepatitis patients in the liver centre.
Sheikh Ashfaq claimed that out of the total hepatitis patients treated by Faisalabad Liver Centre, about 85 percent have completely been cured. He told that the Mrs Stifni Booth, mother-in-law of former Prime Minister of Britain, Tony Blair, had recently visited the centre and appreciated its working and achievements. She announced that the NGOs of UK would be motivated to extend maximum possible monetary help to the liver centre, which has now become a full-fledged liver hospital.
