150 police commandos to be deployed in Lyari

Following the directives of President Zardari, the Sindh police on Monday announced to depute 150 commandos at Lyari to avert any untoward situation. According to official sources, the meeting chaired by president Zardari at Karachi on Sunday reviewed the poor law-and-order situation of Lyari and decided to take remedial measures to avoid such violent incidents in future.
Subsequently, the CCPO Karachi Saud Mirza along with DIG South Commander Shaukat, SSP Lyari and SHO Bagdadi visited the most affected parts of Lyari. The city police chief during his visit has offered to the inhabitants belonging to Katchi community, who were forced to migrate to other parts of the city, to come back to their homes as the government has decided to deploy 150 police commandos at Lyari.
They said the Sindh government has further announced to constitute a committee comprising the representatives of Katchi community, People's Amn Committee (PAC) and government officials to maintain peace in the area.
To a question, they said although president Zardari has stated to provide compensation to the inhabitants of Lyari for their losses, the Sindh police would not take part in this process as the same is going to be done at party level. They said the Sindh police have also planned to establish check-post near Khadda market at most controversial plot of Lyari, which was claimed by three different groups including Katchi, PAC and Deobandi school of thought.
Moreover, they said the Sindh police would initially deploy 150 commandos at the area and if the situation demanded, the strength could be increased up to 250 commandos.
The official sources said that around 80 per cent of Katchi population, which was forcibly migrated to the other parts of city because of Lyari unrest, is coming back to their homes after the assurance of Sindh police to beef up security in the area to avert such violent episodes in future. Needless to mention, President Zardari has taken serious notice on the spurting targeted killings at Lyari after the Katchis' protest rally came under armed attack at Maripur road on Saturday.
Scores of Katchi Rabita Committee (KRC) members tried to march towards CM house to express resentment against the defunct PAC and the Lyari gangsters, who allegedly occupied dozens of Katchis' homes at several parts of Lyari including Jataoi Muhalla, Nayaabad and others during recent spree of violence in Lyari. However, the efforts of the protesters went in vain after an armed attack, which left seven persons including a woman in a pool of blood.
