The proceedings of International Labour Organisation's (ILO's) 100th annual conference and salient features of the convention on domestic workers will be discussed at a meeting convened by Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (Piler) here on July 19.
At the 100th annual International Labour Organisation conference held in Geneva from June 1 to 17, 2011, the convention on domestic workers was adopted. The conference was attended by about 9,000 participants from around 150 countries of the world, including representatives of government, employers and workers. Pakistan was also a signatory of the document.
This has been described as a historic set of international standards aimed at improving the working conditions of millions of domestic workers world-wide and is being considered an important milestone for the trade union movement. However, a lot of spade work is required for its implementation by the ILO member countries, especially through ratification by the states and, subsequently, enacting necessary laws for the domestic workers, according to the convention. Trade unions, civil society organisations and women organisations have been invited to attend the discussions to be held at PMA House here.
