Days before India and the United States hold their second strategic dialogue, the Indian government on Saturday formally announced appointment of Foreign Secretary Ms Nirupama Rao as its next ambassador to the United States.
Vishnu Prakash, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, tweeted Ms Rao's appointment as India's next envoy to Washington on social networking site. Minutes later, the Ministry formally announced her appointment, saying hat she is expected to take up her assignment shortly. Ranjan Mathai will succeed her as Foreign Secretary.
Ms Rao's appointment was cleared by the government a few weeks ago. Her tenure as foreign secretary ends on July 31. A former ambassador to China and Sri Lanka, she will succeed Meera Shankar to become India's second woman ambassador to the US.
