Federal Minister for Interior, Rehman Malik on Friday expressed concern over unchecked movement of Afghan refugees across the border, saying that they are going to Afghanistan without checking and registration, which is grave violation of UNHCR rules.
Pakistan is working with the Afghan government for re-instalment of biometrics system, so that complete check would be made on the movement of Afghan refugees, Malik said while talking to Mangesha Kebede, Country Representative of UNHCR.
The UNHCR country chief called on Malik in Islamabad and during the meeting both discussed the difficulties related to Afghan refugees. They also discussed matters pertaining to the signing of 51 Convention on Refugees and requested that Pakistan may become its member.
In order to ensure implementation of the UNHCR rules, the Minister for Interior assured full co-operation to the UNHCR, saying, "We had already welcomed our Afghan brothers and hoped that Afghan brothers will abide by our laws and follow the rules of UNHCR." He said the government of Pakistan expects Afghan Refugees to refrain from crimes. "We have worked with UNHCR to facilitate the repatriation of Afghan refugees and assured full support and co-operation of the Ministry of Interior to UNHCR," he added.
