Les Hinton, who served as chairman of News International during the phone-hacking by the News of the World, is to resign on Friday as chief executive of News Corp's Dow Jones unit, The Wall Street Journal reported. Hinton served as chairman of News International, News Corp's British newspaper division, from 1995 to 2007, when he joined Dow Jones, publisher of The Wall Street Journal. Current News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks resigned earlier Friday.
She was the highest-level executive to be taken down by the phone-hacking scandal that led News Corp chairman and chief executive Rupert Murdoch to shut down the News of the World over the weekend. Murdoch on Friday apologised to the family of a murdered girl at the heart of the phone-hacking row in a bid to defuse the crisis engulfing his media empire. Brooks was editor of the News of the World from 2000-2003, the time when it allegedly hacked the phone of murdered teenager Milly Dowler - the claim that sparked the crisis and led to the closure of the tabloid.
