United Nation Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) is planning to launch a one- year diploma for training food inspectors in collaboration with Pakistan's academia. This was discussed in a meeting between vice-chancellor University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Dr Muhammad Akram and a two- member UNIDO delegation held, here on Thursday.
The representative of UNIDO Andrew Mathieson and Muhammad Aurangzeb explained that sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) issues had emerged as significant potential obstacles as other trade policy barriers are reduced under the WTO regime. They said, "UNIDO is working to introduce standards regarding the food safety and enhancing the export volume." Mathieson further said.
"I will prepare a report by the end of this month about three institution's quality of education and available facilities then one institution will be asked to start one-year diploma. He said that after completion of four-year graduation they would be eligible to take one-year diploma course.
The meeting was attended by Dean faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Professor Dr Nasim Ahmad, Dean faculty of Animal Production and Technology, Professor Dr Talat Naseer Pasha, UVAS Registrar, Dr Kamran Ashraf, Chairman Microbiology Department, Professor Dr Khushi Muhammad, Director Quality Operational Laboratory (QOL), Dr Atif Hanif and Treasurer, Aslam Pervaiz.
Dr Nawaz said that UVAS contribution to celebrate World Veterinary Day recognised by World Veterinary Association and the office of International Epizooticus in Paris and Pakistan won first prize. He further said that the university had signed 24 MoUs with many international institutions to upgrade the standard of education," he explained. He said the university was making efforts to provide quality education within limited available resources.
