SU holds seminar on 'Criminal Behaviour'

The Department of Criminology, University of Sindh and DIG Police organised one-day seminar on Criminal Behaviour, Investigation Techniques and Victim-dealing" at Shaikh Ayaz Auditorium of the varsity. The seminar was arranged to develop capacity of the police department, especially investigation wing, in the field. Senior police officers and their subordinates attended the seminar.
Waheed A. Abassi, lecturer of the department of criminology deliberated upon his theoretical perception on 'role of various factors in developing criminal behaviour'. Dr Irfana Shah, Assistant Professor of Psychology in her presentation on 'victim-dealing' highlighted various ways and strategies for the police and society in dealing with the victims of crimes. She talked about the trauma of victims and suggested several counter-mechanisms in this regard.
Professor Salma Leghari Chairperson Department of Philosophy focused her presentation on 'Crime against Women', in perception of Sindh. She highlighted the gravity of crimes against women including humiliation, violence, acid throwing and sexual harassment resulting from the 'pathology of silence' of male-dominated society.
Dr Nabi Bux Narejo, Chairman Department of Criminology of the University of Sindh delivered his lecture on 'police investigative techniques'. He presented an integrated scenario of police/crimes justice system. He emphasised role of adequate recruitment, merit-based promotions, resources-enhancement and proper training for the specialised wing of investigative police in this regard.
He focused on the gap and divide and lack of co-ordination among key stakeholders. He said that police performance will not improve without trust and co-operation earned through its key stakeholders. Syed Imdad Hussain Shah, SSP Investigation Hyderabad thanked all the participants, including DIG, Hyderabad, department of criminology and Registrar University of Sindh, who had put their efforts to make the seminar successful.
