The Australian dollar skidded to a two-week low on Thursday as a disappointing jobs report prompted markets to scale back the risk of a rise in interest rates, while the kiwi got a boost from an increasingly hawkish central bank. The Aussie dollar fell as much as 0.7 percent on the euro and lost ground to the US dollar, kiwi, yen, Swiss and sterling.
It dived a full cent at one point to a low of $1.0563, before clawing back to $1.0586. It had already been under pressure after the RBA's decision to keep its 4.75 percent rate on hold this week, while showing no sign of being in a hurry to tighten policy. The soft jobs data contrasted with a more upbeat statement from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) and sent the Aussie reeling to a four-month low on the kiwi. Aussie slipped to NZ$1.2853, from $1.3022 before the RBNZ news, before edging back to NZ$1.2911.
The New Zealand dollar jumped a full cent against the greenback to a one-week high of $0.8246, before edging back to around $0.8200. Kiwi support is seen at $0.8120 with initial resistance at $0.8245 ahead of the 26-year high of $0.8264.
