Major cracks have appeared in the walls of 12 newly built huts at Keenjhar Lake due to the use of substandard material in the construction and the tourism department has also refused to take administrative control of these huts.
Sources told Business Recorder here on Friday that tenders of these 12 huts were issued during the tenure of Shazia Marri as tourism minister and the construction work was completed during the tenure of current tourism minister Ayaz soomro, who was assigned the portfolio about two months ago.
About a few weeks ago, the tourism department team during their visit to the site, found many major cracks in the walls of all 12 huts. The team also submitted report to the current tourism minister. The tourism minister expressed displeasure and directed the department to write a letter to Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah, which was sent to the Chief Minister's House a few days ago, sources said.
In the letter, the minister has requested the chief minister for holding an inquiry into the matter and taking action against those if found guilty of irregularities in the construction work. When contacted, Ayaz Soomro confirmed the report saying that "if our own people will embezzle the public money, how others will support us." He said that he would not take control of these huts until the involved culprits would be punished.
He said that Keenjhar Lake was one of the major sources of tourism in Sindh. Thousands of people visit the area on daily basis and it was the responsibility of the tourism department to facilitate them, he maintained. He said that 24 huts were already at Keenjhar Lake and the conditions of these huts were also worst, which needed the department's attention.
