US corn and wheat futures at the Chicago Board of Trade were up sharply early on Monday, with corn reacting to expectations for tight supplies and wheat lifted by dry weather in the US Plains, traders said. Soyabean futures opened higher, but gains faded rapidly amid concerns about export demand, particularly from China. At 9:42 am CDT (1443 GMT), May corn was up 18 cents at $7.54, while May wheat was 24-1/2 cents higher at $7.84 and May soyabeans were down 5 cents a bushel at $13.88-3/4.
