Fukushima accident does not pose any direct risk to public or environment :PNRA

After calculating information, Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) has released assurance that the accident at Fukushima does not pose any direct risk to public or environment. However, in a statement, authority cautions, "If the PNRA air sampling monitors detect any change in the radioactivity level, the PNRA will issue appropriate advisories for public."
On other side, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) claims that the radioactivity released from Japan will be mixed with the jet streams at very high altitudes, which move in Easterly direction. The PNRA released detail stated that it is continuously performing environmental monitoring throughout the country to assess any change in natural radioactivity level. So far, no change in the environment radioactivity level has been observed.
Like other nuclear regulatory authorities in the world, PNRA has advised Pakistan Automatic Energy Commission (PAEC) to revisit the safety aspects of the nuclear power plants at Karachi and Chashma with reference to site studies, safety systems, operator's training, emergency power systems, off-site emergency preparedness plans etc. Experts said that Pakistan nuclear facilities are safe.
They have non-radioactive steam system while in Japan the nuclear reactors hit by tsunami had radio active steam system. They said that the technology with Japan is about 40 years old and they use light water cooling system, but Pakistan is using heavy waters in its nuclear reactors. Sophisticated technology with double containments is used in Pakistani reactors.
It has been learnt that the Tsunami that proved lethal-moving at 500 km per hour and 20 meter high that simply destroyed the back up systems in Japan. In Pakistan no other reactor can face tsunami, but the only exception is KAUPP. But it is located in height and therefore, safer. At the moment there are 20 radiation monitoring centers in Pakistan, but so far nothing unusual has been noticed in the country.-PR
