There are only four rooms for seven classes in BMB Government Girls Primary School. A survey of the school revealed, here on Saturday. The school is situated on the Metropolitan Artillery Ground adjacent to Burns Road. It has 140 students of class one to five. Three of the classes are conducted in corridors as the school has only four rooms.
"We started pre-primary classes of Nursery to Kindergarten II because previously, it became a problem to have students in class one because parents preferred to put a child in nursery instead of class one directly. Once they admit their children, they do not wish to change it till passing out of the primary level, a senior teacher of the school informed. The teacher informed that the pre-primary classes were an idea of the schoolteachers.
The institute has only seven teachers for seven classes so if any teacher goes on leave, it becomes a huge problem for staff. Nowadays two teachers are on medical leave. The school has only one maid and no sweeper. Worried at this situation, teachers arranged a sweeper and giving him a salary of Rs 500 "from their own pockets".
To top it all, the school has surrounded by land mafia and their illegal encroachment. Glass and framework traders have established their shops on the footpath of school and even constructed two floors on its boundary wall. Earlier, when school management complained about them, its management started getting threats. The mafia even throws broken glass pieces inside the premises and all around the school gate.
They also park their bikes in a way that entering or leaving the school becomes a problem. The teacher said that the school located on a very busy road but has no guard to help out the young girls cross the road. A police sergeant sometimes stands beside the gate and starts helping them.
