Parliamentary body on judges' appointment to meet on April 7

The Senate was informed on Thursday that Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment would meet on April 07 to thoroughly discuss the detailed order of the Supreme Court in which the court overruled recommendations of the body and granted extension to six additional judges of the high courts.
Responding to points of order by various senators, Leader of the House Syed Nayar Hussain Bokhari, who is also heading the parliamentary committee on the judges' appointment, told the House that a meeting of the parliamentary committee has been convened on April 07 in consultations with all the committee members. He said that the detailed judgement of the court would be taken up in the meeting thoroughly.
The committee had denied extension in services of the six judges of the high courts that includes two additional judges of Sindh High Court-Justice Mohammad Tasneem and Justice Salman Hamid and four additional judges of Lahore High Court-Justice Muhammad Yawar Ali, Justice Syed Mazhar Ali Akbar Naqvi, Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh and Justice Muhammad Farrukh Irfan Khan. Whereas, the apex court in its detailed judgement has annulled the recommendations of the parliamentary committee.
Senator Zahid Khan, while speaking on a point of order expressed concern over the detailed order of the apex court saying that what wrong has been committed by the parliamentary panel on which the apex court issued decision against its recommendations.
He further questioned whether the parliamentary committee has merely a role of 'post office', adding that parliament was supreme and has the authority to frame and amend laws.
Referring to the detailed judgement of the apex court, the Senator said that if such was the situation, then the parliamentary committee should withdraw its functions so that the sanctity of the Parliament could prevail. He also demanded of the committee to refer the matter to the Parliament for discussion. Endorsing the viewpoint of Zahid Khan, member of the parliamentary committee belonging to PPP Senator Sabir Baloch said that the decision of the parliamentary panel was based on recommendations by the Chief Justice of the LHC. PML-N's Senator Ishaq Dar proposed that the detailed judgement of the apex court be discussed in both the houses of the parliament and recommendations be submitted to the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms so as to remove the lacunae in the constitution.
