A three-day international conference on "Current Technologies in Oils and Fats", organised by the Centre of Excellence in Analytical Chemistry, University of Sindh concluded on Wednesday evening. Scholars from Turkey, Malaysia and Pakistan presented their research papers while a large number of people from industry and academia and students participated in the event.
Dr Ozlem Tokusoglu from Celal Bayer University, Turkey presented the research conducted on nut oils and pastes: microwave processing and ultrasound-assisted extraction on lipid and antioxidant profiles. He said that epidemiological studies have consistently associated nut consumption with reduced risk for coronary heart disease and positive effects on blood levels.
The scholar said that with the evaluation of response surface methodology and using microwave and comparatively ultrasound at our developed conditions, it was found that there were higher extraction stability, higher ant oxidative patterns and longer shelf-life stability of nut oils and pastes after ultrasound processing.
Professor Ansari from Bahauddin Zakria University, Professor Hussain Kara from Selcuk University, Turkey in their research papers emphasised on strengthening bonds by collaborative research between institutes and industries. Dr Hussain Kara on "Monitoring of Tocopherol Content in Cottonseed Oil During Refining Process", said that crude cottonseed oil contain a variety of minor components, such as hydrocarbons, sterols, tocopherols, polyphenols, colour compounds and trace metals. The refining process removes or reduces contaminants of crude oil that could potentially effect quality of the end product and the efficiently of lipid modification, he added.
Dr Maznah Ismail from University of Putra Malaysia presenting paper on Kenaf Bio-Oil: special oil with potential health properties said research for novel edible especially oil with potential health properties is an important economic activity. The scholar said that among new plant resources that have been recently discovered in Malaysia is kenaf and added that it is receiving and increasing attention from manufactures due to its broad applications in fibre board, biocomposite materials and animal feed.
The scholar pointed out that kenaf bio-oil extracted using supercritical fluid extraction system has been shown to have higher phytosterol content as compared to other edible oils such as olive oil and sesame oil. She added that kenaf bio-oil promise wide application in the food industry, nutraceutical products and as carrier oil for other non polar bioactivities while kenaf root and leaf extracts have been shown to be anti-diabetic. The concluding day was chaired by Dr Muhammad Tahir Rajput, Dean Faculty of Natural Sciences University of Sindh. The day started with the national anthem followed by documentary of legends of Pakistan. The activity was augmented by the audience as a patriotic zeal was visible. Dr Muhammad Yakoob Mughal, on the occasion spoke about Quaid-e-Azam and Pakistan.
