A mass march in London this weekend organised by Britain's trade unions could herald a wave of industrial strife, protests and other direct action, the head of the country's largest union warned on Thursday.
Len McCluskey, general secretary of the Unite union, said he expected more than 200,000 people to join Saturday's protest against the coalition government's deep spending cuts but added it would mark only the start of a public backlash.
He said his union, which has 1.5 million members, would back co-ordinated strikes and all protests against austerity measures, which include 81 billion pounds of cuts to public spending and are designed to eliminate the bulk of a budget deficit by 2015. "Industrial strife will grow and grow. I don't think we should rule anything in or anything out," McCluskey told reporters.
