Indian rupee soars

Published Updated

The Indian rupee ended stronger on Thursday boosted by positive local shares and inflows from corporate borrowings, but a weak euro and high oil prices could play spoilsport, traders said. The partially convertible rupee closed at 44.7450/7500 per dollar, 0.2 percent stronger than Wednesday's close of 44.83/84, its highest level since January 4. It had traded in a range of 44.71-44.89 intraday.
The one-month onshore forward premium was at 31.00 points, higher than its previous close of 30.50, while the three-month premium was at 84.50 points versus 86.50 and the one-year was at 296.25 points from the previous 296.50.
The one-month offshore non-deliverable forward contracts were quoted 45.00, weaker than the onshore spot rate.
In the currency futures market , the most traded near-month dollar-rupee contracts on the National Stock Exchange, the MCX-SX and the United Stock Exchange were at 44.7900, 44.7850 and 44.7950, with the total volume at about $8.35 billion.
