A policeman was killed and three others including DSP Sohrab Goth Iftikhar Lodhi were injured in a scuffle with land mafia at Superhighway here on Wednesday. According to police sources, the Sindh High Court (SHC) had directed the police to evacuate seven acres of encroached land at sector 5A near Ahsanabad chowk in the limits of Sohrab Goth police station.
Reacting on the directives, the police force led by DSP Sohrab Goth Iftikhar Lodhi reached on spot at 2pm to initiate operation against land grabbers but hundreds of protesters gathered at the place and staged protest against police. They pelted stones on police, burnt tyres and blocked all movements at main arteries. Resultantly, DSP Sohrab Goth Iftikhar Lodhi and two other police personnel were injured during the scuffle.
Police said that when they used water-cannons and fired tear gas to disperse the protesters, one of them opened fire on police, leaving a police constable Shabaaz son of Nawaz in a critical condition, who succumbed to his injuries in hospital. They said the late PC Shabaaz, who was the resident of Malik Society and a father of two children, had been serving at Sohrab Goth police station for the last ten years.
SP Gadap Town Rao Anwaar said that they had now stopped the said operation on the directives of SHC and nominated Noor Khan on the killing of PC Shabaaz. He further said the offender managed to flee after committing this heinous crime, leaving the decease in a pool of blood and his colleagues in shock. Meanwhile, DSP Sohrab Goth Iftikhar Lodhi also confirmed that he was also injured along with two other policemen during operation against the land mafia.
He said that over 450 policemen and the officials of Anti-Encroachment Cell (AEC) and the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) participated in this operation. Needless to mention, this was the second move of the police during last two consecutive days to evacuate the encroached land but they failed to do so because of strong resistance shown by the protesters especially women.
