As a part of National Tree Plantation Drive, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) would plant 500,000 saplings during the Spring Tree Plantation Campaign 2011. The CDA is making all-out efforts to increase the green cover and preserve the green character of the federal capital, said Imtiaz Inayat Elahi Chairman CDA while presiding over the meeting held here on Wednesday.
The meeting was summoned to review the progress of Clean and Green Islamabad Campaign launched in Monsoon-2008 and to fix the targets for the Spring Tree Plantation Campaign 2011. Elahi said that under the three-year "Clean and Green Islamabad Campaign" started in Monsoon-2008, CDA has so far planted 18,39,000 plants in five seasons till Monsoon 2010.
Elahi said that the CDA has planned to plant 180,000 trees in the urban areas of the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), which includes Avenues, Green Belts, Islamabad Highway, Parks, Playfields and new Sectors of G-13, H-11, I-14, I-16 and D-12. He said that 320,000 saplings would be planted in the suburb including Margallah Hills and Simly Catchments. In addition, 200,000 trees would be planted in Margallah Hills as a part of efforts to further increase greenery in the Margallah Hills National Park, whereas 120,000 saplings would be planted in the Simly Catchments.
The CDA is focusing on planting the indigenous species and fruit trees including Chir Pine, Kachnar, Amaltas, Dhreak Jacaranda, Olive and Jaman etc, the CDA chief said, adding that strict monitoring of the planted saplings would be carried out to ensure their maximum survival. He said that CDA actively participates in National Tree Plantation drive during each planting season and involve general public, educational institutions, NGOs, government employees and traders to make the campaigns a success.
The CDA chairman was apprised by the Environment Wing of the Authority that arrangements are being made for planting saplings by the Federal Government Employees, Ministries and Divisions along with Jinnah Avenue between Sectors F-8 and G-8. The meeting was informed that "Public Tree Plantation Day" would be organised by the CDA during third week of the current month in which people from Sector Citizen Committees, traders, educational institutions, NGOs and environmentalists would participate.
Under the awareness campaign, posters, banners and streamers will be displayed in different areas of the city, whereas car-stickers, paper-bags and badges carrying slogans for planting trees would be distributed. Awareness would be created among the people through television, radio talk shows and newspapers.
To make the Spring Tree Plantation more effective, the CDA will establish distribution points in Marakiz of each sector for free distribution of ornamental and fruit plants to the general public, educational institution along with awareness and informative material on plantation and kitchen gardening. The CDA has also planned mobile awareness campaign under which informative material, audio and video information on environment and tree plantation will be transmitted.
