Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL), which is facing a shortfall of 600 MMCFD, nonetheless decided on Monday to restore gas supply to textile industry and CNG sector. A senior SNGPL official said that supply of gas to the system stood at 2000 mmcfd against demand of 2600 mmcfd.
"The domestic demand has increased from 275 mmcfd to 1100 mmcfd due to enhanced use of geezers and room heaters," the official said, adding that demand of CNG sector also increased by 70 to 80 mmcfd during the current year due to illegal use of cylinders by the auto sector which, in turn, may lead to an untoward incident. Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has not taken cognizance of this even though as a regulator it is its responsibility to ensure safety standards.
SNGPL has decided to restore gas supply to textile industry. However, fertiliser sector was not being provided gas at present because fertiliser units had gone on annual turn around for maintenance purposes. The total requirement of CNG sector is 250 mmcfd whereas industrial sector in Punjab requires 600 mmcfd. "The SNGPL has restored the gas supply to CNG stations in Lahore and decision had also been taken to restore gas supply to CNG stations located in other parts of country," the official maintained.
General Manager (Sales) Rehan Nawaz revealed that textile industry had given go-ahead to cut gas supply to textile industry for 36 hours and gas supply was restored on Monday. SNGPL authorities had requested the textile industry to cooperate and APTMA had expressed willingness to cut gas supply to industry.
