Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has maintained it would not be in a position to provide electricity to 40,000 villages during the next 40 years. This was disclosed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Arif Allauddin of Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) during his presentation at Islamabad (December 31, 2010). He also discussed a plan to generate 900 megawatts of clean energy by using wind and sunlight.
Two prime ministers, ie ZAB and Gilani called Wapda as the white elephant. The Wapda has remained symbol of poor performance with high level embezzlement, corruption, misappropriation and mismanagement for the last 40 years. Further, three out of total four provinces have serious objections on its performance as it remained engaged in widening the gap between Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and KP, that was very dangerous for the solidarity of the country. It was my honest view that Wapda has damaged the country more than any outsider has done so far.
The KP Assembly had already passed unanimous resolution to shift the head office of Wapda from Lahore to Peshawar, but Islamabad is not ready to respect it. There was also strong criticism on poor performance of Wapda in the houses of Sindh and Balochistan assemblies from time to time.
I appeal to the prime minister to issue orders to disband Wapda immediately to ensure better future of the country and expedite use of alternate energy on priority basis because if Wapda remains intact, it would not allow resolving energy crisis due to various reasons.
